A tribute to one of my favorite states, the colorful and diverse West Virginia, which split off from Virginia on December 31, 1862, (although it was not admitted to the Union until 1863).

The state motto is Montani semper liberi (mountaineers are always free), which is absolutely fitting given that the state is situated smack-dab in the middle of the Appalachian mountains. Like the rest of the Appalachia region, West Virginia has a rich tradition of folk music, although, unlike some of its Appalachian neighbors further South, the Democratic Party dominates state politics.

With me, it’s like you can say anything you want about my country. Go right ahead, but the moment someone opens their trap and starts talking down on West Virginia, my defense rises and my words get stern.

I think of West Virginia in terms of a fragile old person. It’s so innocent and defenseless, and all I want to do is protect it from bad things and spiteful words that try to take advantage of it; because, at it’s very core, there’s too many stories and too much goodness that should ever go to waste.

Ally said it perfectly. No matter where I go, WV is my home, and I cannot stand to see others talk badly about it.
